Medically speaking, the syndrome, called Deep Vein Thrombosis, forms a blood clot that forms in the deep vein system of the lower leg and could cause respiratory difficulties or cardiac arrest. On the leg-cramped flight, the blood flow is detained in the deep vein, which forms the blood clot. As making sudden move after landing, the clod in the deep vein of the lower legs may travel through the veins, lodge in the lungs, and block the stream.
\nAlthough there is no detailed data from takeoff to landing based on age or gender in order to make the cause clear, at least, the physicians who were involved in the medical care demonstrate that the travelers stayed inactive for too long in the confined economy seats.
\nThe expansion of flying time originated from the appearance of DC-8-62 to what we call the jumbo jet B-747. The travelers, for example, from Japan to Los Angeles used to pass through Honolulu, or to New York via Anchorage, or to Europe via Anchorage or Moscow. These stops supplied the passengers fresh air and time to move around. The stopovers cannot meet the convenience of the direct flights, but may have reduced the dangers of air travel. However, there is no choice for passengers since via flights no longer exist.
\nNowadays the direct flights from Tokyo to New York take approximately 13-14 hours, or more than 11 hours to European countries. As to reduce the risks of DVT Stroke, for example, Japanese airlines such as Japan Airline have started providing a bottle of water to each passenger and introduced exercises on the screen that you can do during travel. Considering the cost that is paid for the economy class, it may be out of the question to increase the space, however, it is very important to respond to the passenger’s demand ‘to provide the minimum comfort’.
\nWhile airline companies compete by providing spacious seats with more than 30% of space or by increasing the entertainment services on the flight, it is inevitable for them, as to offer the safety and the comfort, to try how to work out the problem of Economy-class Syndrome.
\nSome companies like American Airline hang out, as a slogan, ‘A Comfort to all the passengers in every class’, reducing 14 seats in the business class and offering more space to the economy class with the seats of 34 inches instead of 31 inches. Following the policy, some economy seats on United Airline are expanded its size of 34 inches.
\nEach airline should supply the minimum space, as a human being, to the travelers in addition to other services not because others do but because their own policy stands that way.
\nThe participants in the airline industry should be reminded that the current development of the industry has originated from the beginning of mass-transportation era of Jumbo Jets, and ‘Every Voyage begins from Economy Class’.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Do you hear people saying ‘No More Confined Seats’?
